Group-winning sprinter by sire of sires Written Tycoon

Tough, good looking, unbeaten as a juvenile and a Gr.2 winner just like his Champion sire, First Settler is the latest addition to Yulong’s growing Victorian roster. The imposing sprinter offers breeders an exceptional opportunity to utilise a fast and talented son of sire of sires Written Tycoon an attractive and affordable fee level.

First Settler boasts a pedigree rich in Gr.1 performers, by our own Champion Sire in Written Tycoon whose 76 individual Stakes winner honour roll includes two Golden Slipper winners in Capitalist and Lady Of Camelot, Blue Diamond victor Written By, and a further 14 Gr.1 winners. He was the first sire since Redoute’s Choice and Danehill in the last 25 years to sire two colts to win the two richest Gr.1 two-year-old features in Australia, and is the only current active sire to do so.

First Settler is out of Graciousness (Street Cry), a talented mare who won over a mile and descends from one of Australia’s most influential families as a daughter of the blue hen Lady Capel (Last Tycoon), dam of Gr.1 Chipping Norton Stakes winner and proven sire Casino Prince. She also produced Chateau Cheval (High Chaparral), a three-time winner and dam of Best Of Bordeaux, a dual Group-winning two-year-old who now stands at Coolmore Stud. Graciousness has already produced Stakes-winning filly Vienna Princess (Snitzel), winner of the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes and $1M Silver Eagle.

The son of Written Tycoon is an imposing individual. He was a standout at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where he sold for $750,000 to Yulong and Mick Price – a reflection of his excellent conformation and presence.

Baramul Stud’s Luke McDonald recalled the colt as “Exceptionally well-muscled, very robust, strong, and well-proportioned,” noting that “he had a bit of X-factor about him” from an early age.

Unbeaten as a juvenile, First Settler scored dominant back-to-back 1000m victories in the Sportsbet 2YO Handicap at Caulfield and the Russell Dawson 2YO Plate at Flemington. Trained by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr, he returned at three to claim a thrilling win in the Gr.2 Danehill Stakes – storming from last to first to win a dazzling photo finish ahead of subsequent Gr.1 Goodwood Handicap winner Reserve Bank.

Co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr praised First Settler as “A very good straight horse, a good, masculine sprinting colt”, noting his affinity with the Flemington straight, where he recorded two wins and a second from three starts.

Yulong’s Chief Operating Officer, Sam Fairgray, echoed those sentiments, stating, “First Settler was a big, strong, forward colt with a great temperament from day one. He is by a Champion Sire, out of a fast Street Cry mare, and from a family full of Gr.1 performers. On the track, he had blistering speed and toughness, and he’s exactly the type of athletic, precocious horse that breeders love. We believe he offers exceptional value, starting his career at a similar affordable fee to his father.”
