Precocity in spades! Freshman sire Lucky Vega records first two-year-old trial winner

First-season sire Lucky Vega looks to be assembling a strong hand of first-crop runners, with two-year-old colt Vega For Luck stepping out to deliver a smart trial win in the first heat at Te Rapa on Tuesday 24th September.
The Karaka Book 1 graduate showed tremendous speed in the 650m trial for Gr.1 trainers Ben & Ryan Foote, going away from his rivals in the final 100m to record a cosy two and a half-length victory.

Bred by Inglewood Stud, Vega For Luck is out of the winning Darci Brahma mare Badea, a half-sister to Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes winner Lilikoi, and out of a Giant’s Causeway sister to high-class juvenile Requinto. His third dam is Champion two-year-old Damson (Entrepreneur), winner of the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, alongside the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes, the same race won by Vega For Luck’s own sire.

“He’s a real professional. You can’t fault him, he’s got a great constitution, and his attitude couldn’t be any better. He shows everything you want to see to go early.” Ben Foote (Trainer – Vega For Luck)

Lucky Vega’s own early precocity earnt him a win on debut ahead of subsequent juvenile Stakes winners Battleground and Laws Of Indices, prior to his defeat of European Champion Two-Year-Old St Mark’s Basilica in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh.

Hailing from the Shamardal sire line famed for producing smart early types, Lucky Vega’s female family is also littered with precocious two-year-old talent, with dual Gr.1 winner and joint Champion Two-Year-Old Colt Militarize out of a half-sister to Lucky Vega’s own dam.
