Tofane retires to stud

After a glittering career on the track, four-time Group 1 winner Tofane will be retired to Yulong Stud to be covered by Champion Sire Written Tycoon.

Trained by Michael Moroney, Tofane’s first Group 1 win was a hard-fought battle against Pierata in the 2020 All Aged Stakes, in which she defeated other future stallions such as Bivouac, Super Seth and Fierce Impact.

During the 2021 Brisbane carnival Tofane dominated the G1 Tattersalls’s Tiara, just two weeks after her impressive victory in the time honoured G1 Stradbroke Handicap.

Her latest Group 1 came this year in the CF Orr Stakes, in which she led all the way to beat a host of elite winners, including Cascadian and Lighthouse.

“The more we raced her, the better she got,” Moroney said.

“With her record of wins and placings, that’s hard to do for mares, especially taking on the boys.”

The 7-year-old mare, who has flown the flag for her own sire Ocean Park (a close relation to Yulong sire Grunt), retires with almost $3.7 million in career earnings after eight victories.

“We’re excited to get Tofane to the farm, she’ll be covered in the next few weeks by Written Tycoon,” said Yulong’s Chief Operating Officer, Sam Fairgray.

“She was such a tough and brilliant race mare, and has an excellent pedigree.”

Tofane was purchased by Yulong at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, and she boasts a pedigree of elite performers.

She is out of the Galileo mare Baggy Green, making her a three-quarter sister to Funstar, from a family which stretches back to the European triple-Classic winner User Friendly.

With an exceptional pedigree, and a race record to match, Yulong is excited for her future as a broodmare.
