Equine Veterinary Nurse

Yulong is seeking a highly motivated and adaptive individual to join our growing team as in a seasonal night nursing capacity as well as additional day nurses.  

We currently have ten resident veterinarians (some seasonal), four veterinary nurses and two lab technicians. Yulong is a growing thoroughbred stud based in Nagambie, Victoria. Spread over 3,000 acres and across four adjoining properties, Yulong currently has ten resident stallions and 800 broodmares with nearly 500 foals to yearlings. A new pretraining facility has also opened nearby.

Yulong’s veterinary facilities include a full laboratory comprised of hematology, chemistry and blood gas machines along with the ability to do cultures and sensitivities. We also have portable ultrasounds, digital radiograph machines and video endoscope machines. 

The chosen candidates will be responsible for all the overnight treatments in their assigned foaling unit. The nurses are also expected to work alongside the veterinarians and nighttime staff to complete various medical tasks or assist in emergency situations. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to gain additional experience with neonates or for a more experienced vet nurse to utilize their skill set. The candidates will also be exposed to all aspects of a thoroughbred breeding operation. You will be joining a fun team with a passion for providing a high-level of care to our equine patients. The positions being offered are seasonal with the potential for full time employment once the southern hemisphere breeding season has ended.

To be considered you must possess the following skills and qualities:

  • Completion of Certificate IV in vet nursing is desirable but not required
  • A self-starter who can work efficiently with and without guidance.
  • Great work ethic, resilient and with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated high level horse handling skills.
  • Ability to perform a basic physical exam and initial triage of wounds and sick horses.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact clearly with veterinarians, stud staff and management.
  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft programs.
  • Full Drivers licence.

Your duties would include but not be limited to:

  • Patient treatments (including IV, IM and catheter) and bandage changes.
  • Assisting the resident veterinarians with various tasks and procedures.
  • Basic lab procedures such a running bloods and plating cultures.
  • Maintenance of all equipment.
  • Ordering of all medical supplies and.

The compensation is very competitive and will vary based on level of experience. For the night nursing role, the pay will be $40-$45 per hour. For the day nursing role, the salary will be $70,000-80,000.

The job position will be located in Nagambie. We are looking for full time and part time workers for both roles.
